About the Poet

Kia West is a secondary school teacher living and working in Brisbane, Australia.

While studying her Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Queensland, Kia undertook several courses with a strong poetry focus…And was bored out of her mind. It wasn’t until she completed her Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education and started teaching poetry to high school students, that Kia started to see the beauty in this form of writing.

Now, her brain will not shut off and Kia spends her days annoying her students and fellow staff with her rhymes and alliteration about anything that may pop into her head.

In her spare time, Kia enjoys traveling to Disney theme parks, cooking and spoiling her fat dog.

About the Website

This website aims to provide quality poetry content for a school-age and pre-school age audience of all ability levels.

It was born out of the frustration that Kia noticed in her fellow colleagues when they sought to find simple poems to teach poetic devices to younger high school and primary school level students. It’s Kia’s hope that a teacher will never again have to throw up their arms in frustration, saying, “I wish I could find a poem with spoonerisms and rhyme!”

To keep things as simple and easy as possible for educators and parents visiting this page, all of the poems on this site have a brief description of what the poem is about and a list of the poetic devices that students should be able to spot in the poem.

All poems, posts and other content remain the property of Kia West and poemsfortheclassroom.com . They may not be copied or re-published without the express and written permission from the poet. In cases when this permission is granted, full and explicit credit must be given to the original author and this website.
