This is a creepy poem to put out with a bowl of treats on Halloween. It implies that a monster lives in your house. The Halloween Sign Poem uses rhyme, alliteration and assonance.
“Halloween Sign Poem”
By Kia West
Welcome foolish mortals
Dressed up to look like me
Remember that real monsters lurk
Where none of you can see
Take your sweet treat
Have some fun
Enjoy your Halloween
But remember when the night is done
I don’t cease to be
I lurk in places that are dim
That would make hair stand on end
and if we meet, it would be grim
For I am no human’s friend

More about the Halloween Sign Poem…
This poem has single verse with thirteen lines and uses rhyme throughout. Rhyme is when words have the same ending sound and the use of rhyme helps the poem to flow and sound pleasant.
Throughout the poem, even numbered lines rhyme in couplets. For example, lines two and four rhyme and lines six and eight rhyme. Lines eleven and thirteen also rhyme for a pleasant sounding finish.
This poem has alliteration. Alliteration is when words in close proximity to each other start with the same consonant sound. An example of alliteration in this poem is in lines two and three, where the “L” sound is repeated:
“Dressed up to look like me
Remember that real monsters lurk”
Assonance is when vowel sounds are repeated in close proximity to each other. It is sometime referred to as near-rhyme. Assonance can be seen in this poem through the repetition of the long “e” sound through out. For example, in words like “see”, “sweet” and “Halloween.”

Kia West wrote this poem for a Halloween when she wasn’t going to be home to hand out treats in person. Using a painted piece of melamine board, a Cricut Joy machine and some black vinyl, Kia created her sign to show she was still in the Halloween spirit.
